Description

The Spirit of Apu Ausangate, 4 Day Trek, is one of the best options that Peru offers to hike lovers. Don’t miss the excitement of this adventure heading to the Rainbow Mountain, located in the middle of the Andes mountain range. You’ll observe gigantic glaciers, crystalline lagoons, and herds of llamas and alpacas.

This 4-day hike takes us through a genuinely unusual circuit, hidden between the Vilcanota Mountain Range, at the foot of the majestic Apu Ausagante (6,384 masl / 20,945 fasl), which is the highest mountain in southern Peru. This snowy peak has been considered sacred since ancient times by the ancient inhabitants of the Andes.

Explore the heights on a walk that will be smooth and pleasant at times, but that will also require your effort. Escape the tourist crowds and connect with nature in absolute tranquillity. You won’t regret it!

Briefing before the excursion:

  • Before doing the Ausangate Route and Rainbow Mountain 4D / 3N, we’ll organize an informative meeting with your guide at your hotel. The schedule will be confirmed by email. Take this opportunity to answer any questions you have and prepare in the best way for your adventure.

Day 1

Cusco | Catcca - Ocongate - Tinki - Upis Thermal Baths

We’ll start our adventure very early. We’ll pick you up from your hotel at 5:00 am and go in a private vehicle towards Urcos, the capital of the Quispicanchi province, located southeast of Cusco. On the way, we’ll be able to observe picturesque villages, lagoons, and fertile valleys. We’ll continue to the town of Ocongate and then to Tinque where you can make your last-minute purchases before reaching the community of Upis (3,799 masl / 12,464 fasl), the starting point of our trek. After breakfast, our first day begins on a plain that looks directly at the enormous Ausangate glacier (6,384 masl / 20,945 fasl). You can focus and feel the emotion caused by this great mass of snow in your heart. As we advance, we will meet local people using their beautiful and colorful traditional clothing. Herds of llamas and alpacas will also accompany us. We’ll arrive at the Upis thermal baths (4,198 masl / 13,776 fasl) to enjoy our lunch. Here our camp will be waiting for you, just in front of the Apu Ausangate. In the afternoon, we’ll have time to relax, immerse ourselves in the relaxing thermal waters of the place (S/10.00), and contemplate the sunset that will fill the perpetual snows of the glaciers around us with colors.

  • Travel distance: 11 km / 6.21 miles
  • Walking time: 6 to 7 hours.
  • Altitude of the camp: 4,600 masl / 15,091 fasl
  • Food included: All.
  • Difficulty level: Moderate.
Day 2

Upis Thermal Baths | Arapa Pass - Yanacocha - Pucaqocha Camp

We’ll wake you up today with a hot herbal tea of coca leaves or coffee in your tent. Then we will savor a delicious breakfast in the cold of the high mountains. We’ll begin our walk in a beautiful high Andean valley towards Abra Arapa, always in the spectacular Ausangate Mountain company. From the top of the open (4,798 masl / 15,744 fasl), the beauty of the landscape multiplies. You’ll be able to observe the size of the mountain range and, if you’re lucky, the beautiful flight of the condor. Our guide will explain a little more about the impressive local flora and fauna. Then we’ll begin to descend and will encounter the beauty of the multi-colored crystalline lagoons of Yanaqocha (black lake) and Pukaqocha (red lake) and several waterfalls. Later, we’ll arrive at our camp where, after an excellent meal, you’ll have time to take a refreshing nap. In the afternoon, we can explore the vicinity of the lakes and drink delicious tea. Obviously, before going to sleep, a nutritious dinner awaits you.

  • Travel distance: 11 km / 6.21 miles
  • Walking time: 7 to 8 hours.
  • Altitude of the camp: 4,599 masl / 15,088 fasl

From there, you'll have a phenomenal view of the multi-colored lakes and the two sides of the valley. Then we'll descend to our camp. You will have llamas and alpacas grazing right next to you. You can take as much time as you want to relax or take pictures, but don't forget the lunch that awaits you at the camp.

We’ll wake up early this last day to try to be one of the first to reach the Rainbow Mountain and appreciate its beauty before the other tourists arrive directly from Cusco. We’ll walk 2 hours to the Rainbow Mountain and, after enjoying the spectacular landscape that surrounds us, we’ll begin our descent for 2.5 hours to the lunch point where we will also board our private transport to Cusco. Our service will end at the door of your Cusco hotel.

Personal Gear and Medications
  • Trekking Towel: A small to medium sized hiking towel can come in great use. LifeVentures or Discovery provide good, quick-drying trekking towels.
  • Small Locks: To protect your belongings in your rucksack or duffle bag
  • Waterproof Ziplock Bags: These come in handy for storing important / valuable items like your money, a passport and electrical equipment
  • Isotonic Powder: Can be used to flavour your water nicely and helps replace electrolytes, improving energy levels and aiding water absorption. Here are some good Isotonic powdered drinks
  • Diamox: Also know as acetazolamide, is a medication that can be used as a prophylactic (preventative) solution for altitude sickness. It does not cure altitude sickness and should never therefore never be used as a method to continue ascending to high altitudes. It can however help prevent the onset of altitude sickness and is commonly used by high altitude climbers and trekkers.
  • General Medications: We recommend taking paracetamol or aspirin for headaches (a common altitude sickness symptom on the Salkantay Trek) and Imodium for diarrhoea (another common problem as food preparation can be a little unhygienic)
  • Basic First Aid Kit: If you are joining an organised trek, your guide will most likely be carrying a first aid kit. If you are hiking unsupported or independently then a first aid kit is a must. Here are some compact and good outdoor first aid kits: Outdoor First Aid Kits
  • Suncream / Lip balm: No one wants burnt skin or cracked lips! Be sure to bring 1 x suncream (SPF 30) and 1 x lip balm
  • Baby wipes: For quick and easy wet washe when no showers are in sight! bring 1 x baby wipes
  • Blister Plasters: The dreaded blisters! We recommend taking Compeed blister plasters
  • Hand Sanitizer: Great for disinfecting hands before and after eating, or when they get dirty during the hike
